Whether you're applying to be a personal chef, nanny, personal assistant or chauffeur, it's important to know what to do on the first day of the job. In the first part of our two-part series, we'll look at some things you must do:
1. Do some research
Unlike working at a company, it'll be much tougher to research the workplace environment. The best time to do this is during your interviews with the staffing firm and family, as well as when you get a tour of the family's residence.
2. Do dress appropriately
Before your first day on the job, make sure you know the dress code. Depending on the family and your position, you may be allowed to dress casually. However, if you're required to wear formal clothing, it may take some time to pick out the right attire.
3. Do ask questions
It's better to ask a lot of good questions in the beginning than none at all. Asking questions shows that you're interested.
4. Do say yes
Being a "yes" person isn't always encouraged. After all, families love professionals who can offer their opinions on better ways to accomplish tasks. In the beginning, however, your job is to learn. Once you get a feel for what the family expects, don't hesitate to offer your opinions or draw up new ways to accomplish the same tasks more efficiently.
5. Do give 110 percent
If you're required to work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., don't leave at exactly 5 p.m. Ask your boss if he or she needs any more help prior to leaving. He or she will love the extra effort.
